Our Next Meeting 19th January 2009

Feature

Grammarian

The Grammarian is an important role and provides an excellent opportunity to speak and develop listening skills.

The Grammarian has two roles

  1. Report on the use of language during the meeting, particularly interesting, unusual or effective uses of language. If necessary, perhaps also mention any grammatical errors or "inappropriate" use of language.
  2. Set a 'word of the day' (and report on its use) or suggest the use of a grammatical structure i.e. rhyme, alliteration etc (again demonstrate its use). If choosing a word, ideally, it should be one that isn't in everyday use but is not so obscure that it's difficult to use.

At the meeting

  • After your introduction by the Toastmaster, explain your role and announce the "word of the day", if necessary giving its meaning and some examples of its use.
  • If possible, write or print the word and place it where it will assist the audience and speakers to remember it.
  • Listen carefully to all the speakers and, when called upon by the Toastmaster (towards the end of the meeting), report back with your findings and comments.
  • Take care not to exceed the time allowed
